The use of internet is widespread among young people who use electronic communications as a primary form of peer-to-peer communications. Nowadays all forms of aggression, insult, minor fights, relationship break-ups and bullying take place (also) electronically.
Even if it is perceived that most of these behaviors take place outside schools and it is not the role of the school to take actions because youngsters perform these behaviors outside the school, the negative effects of these behavior have a direct impact over students, their psychological well being and their performance and success.
The Tabby project intends to develop at an European level, an approach to help ultimate beneficiaries, students, to identify the risk connected to a way of using Internet and especially certain social networks and take action to reduce own risk both of potentially or actually harming others or being target of these unwanted behaviours.
We want to help preventing cyberbullying - in particular cyberthreats - among youngsters by assessing the threats of cyberbullying/stalking and sexting by developing a validated approach/tool, kit for students/youngsters who can themselves assess their level of risk of the threats they receive on line, and also the risk of their behavior on line.
The tool is of use also for school teachers, counselors or even parents to identify how much any threat a youngster gets on line is in fact reliable and credible, therefore reliable, requiring supervision, monitoring, intervention. Adults, also play a role in assessing danger kids might be running, and take actions. The method is now under the process of being validated to be used in each EU country, with an European approach.
The Project TABBY (Threat Assessment of Bullying Behavior in Youth on line) aims also at the promotion of wellbeing not only for the reduction of any consequence of such suffering (i.e. intervene when a crime, a wrong-doing is already into place) to promote capacities of resiliency but also to promote awareness on the level of risk which might be connected to the different situation and behaviors (such as use of the internet) the youngster is running.
Internet per se is not noxious, but if misused or risk connected to his misuse, underestimated, than this can cause distress, suffering and victimisation.
